The webDEALER Training Deadline Has Passed

As part of the switch to metal tags another significant change is coming for Texas auto dealers. All licensed dealers in the state will be required to use the webDEALER system to process title and registration transactions electronically with county offices. This change eliminates paper-based processes for these transactions, ensuring a streamlined and efficient system for all parties involved.

Although this requirement begins on July 1, 2025, all dealers new to webDEALER should have underwent WebDEALER training by April 30, 2025 to avoid not being first in line for the issuance of their metal plates. If you have already completed the training, great job and you will be one of the first to receive their metal plates from TxDMV which are scheduled to arrive during the later part of this month. If you not already done it, then it is not too late to avoid an interruption in your business. You should complete your training right away, as your order for delivery of metal plates will be determined based on when you do. If there are any issues in the rollout, your place in line could minimize them.

What is webDEALER?

webDEALER is an online system provided by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV). It enables dealers to electronically submit title and registration applications, reducing errors and speeding up the processing time. By automating these processes, webDEALER helps dealerships stay compliant with state requirements while providing faster customer service.

Key Requirements of HB 718

  • Mandatory Use: Starting July 1, 2025, Texas dealers must process all title and registration transactions through webDEALER. After this date, the current system of going to the TAC will not be available.

  • No Exceptions: Dealers must have webDEALER accounts and plate inventories to complete vehicle sales transactions after this date.

Steps to Get Started with webDEALER

As part of the transition to mandatory webDEALER use, TxDMV requires all existing users who process title and registration transactions to complete webDEALER training by April 30, 2025. New users created on or after this date must complete the training before being granted access to the system. The training includes essential guidance on conducting transactions and proper system usage.

However, exemptions are available for users who have had access to webDEALER for more than six months and completed over 100 transactions within the system by October 1, 2024. Dealers and users who fail to meet these training requirements risk losing access to webDEALER, underscoring the importance of timely compliance.

Dealers who don't currently have a webDEALER account must take the following steps to ensure compliance:

  1. Contact Your Local County Tax Assessor-Collector's Office
Your first step is to coordinate with your local county office. They will help you access webDEALER and guide you on the steps needed to set up your account.

  2. Attend Training
TxDMV offers webDEALER training through live events and on-demand modules in English and Spanish. Taking either the live or on-demand webDEALER training will satisfy the training requirement.

    • Check the TxDMV events calendar for upcoming training sessions.

    • Take advantage of the on-demand training to familiarize yourself and your team with the system at your convenience.

    • For more information and to register for the live or on-demand training, please see webDEALER 101 on the TxDMV website.

  3. Update Your Plate Inventory
Ensure your dealership has the required plate inventory to complete vehicle sales transactions. This can also be coordinated with your local county office.

Plan Ahead

Although the July 2025 deadline may seem far away, it's critical to start preparing now. Dealers who wait risk losing the ability to process vehicle sales, which could significantly impact business operations.

TIADA encourages all members to take proactive steps toward compliance. Contact your local county tax assessor-collector's office today, and take advantage of TxDMV's training resources to make the transition as smooth as possible.
